On a recent long car trip cross country, I realized the importance of a very good habit.
One that certainly could save lives.
This happened when I was on a very fast highway with the exit to a sizable city just about 100 feet away.
This tall bridge highway is not only fast and active - loaded with many fast moving cars, but built with slight slopes of uphill and downhill, and on top of that, built with fast rounded curves.
It was a tense and difficult decision to make. Should I gun for the exit or not?
Hours later, I was still pondering on that challenging decision.
And I realized that the best decision is not just
" When in doubt, skip those exits"
but
"Form the Good Habit of always skipping those exits"
Analyzing your safety zone in the last seconds are way too risky a move for changing lanes quickly to exit especially on such highways of enormous risks. These situations happen most often on fast active highways near a big city exits, since there are a lot of cars coming into an active city.
Avoiding these exits is good practice and habit - just move on to the next exit or next few exits when the traffic slows down.
Later, I found out a better Habit
In fact, one could just arrive to a city by avoiding these dangerous highway exits - just turn on the Local Route on your Map phone app and click "avoid highways' when you are a few exits away. This will allow you to drive on quiet local streets before entering the city via normal roads, saving you a lot of tense moments.
So yes, those fast city highways are not worth exploring.
Leave them to Casper the friendly ghost.
